Acupuncture & Cupping

Acupuncture and Cupping can be incorporated in to your treatment plan for a number of different concerns. All acupuncture appointments are billed under Naturopathic Medicine

Why Use Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a type of therapy that uses very small needles to penetrate the skin in order to obtain a specific benefit. There are two different types of this therapy that I use.

The first is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine theories and can be used for many ailments including:

N

PMS, menstrual irregularities, and hormonal imbalances

N

Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

N

Digestive conditions such as IBS, IBD, and GERD

N

Mental Health concerns such as anxiety and depression

N

Muscle and joint pain

The second is Trigger Point Therapy and is used primarily for muscular and myofascial pain. It involves inserting the needle into tender areas in the muscle in order to improve blood flow to the area and induce muscle relaxation.

Is It Safe To Use Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is extremely safe. The most common side effects include pain on insertion, bleeding upon removal, and bruising. The treatments are specifically tailored toward you, allowing it to be modified according to any symptoms, conditions, or abnormalities that must be considered.

(If you have a fear of needles, please let me know and we will go slow. I personally have a fear of needles, but am still okay with getting acupuncture. The needles are very thin and are hardly felt once they are in)

What Is Cupping?

You may have seen large purple circles (or “round hickeys” as they’ve often been referred to) on athletes such as Michael Phelps and Roberto Osuna. These marks are due to a therapy called Cupping. It uses a variety of different sized plastic cups applied to the skin, which are then “pumped” to remove the air, creating a vacuum seal. This vacuum seal encourages blood flow and movement in the area.

By having the cups vacuum sealed against the skin, they are increasing circulation to the area. This may cause small marks that look like bruises. These marks may last up to a week in some people, so it is not recommended to have cupping performed before occasions where the skin may be exposed (think: Your Wedding).

Cupping is often used to help relieve muscle pain and tension, improve blood and lymph circulation, and for cosmetic purposes (such as cellulite reduction).
