Frequently Asked Questions

Is Naturopathic Medicine Evidence-Based?

While there are a wide variety of treatments to choose from, I focus on research-based approaches. There are a large number of research trials conducted that favor Naturopathic Medicine or natural health products over placebo. If you have questions or would like to see research, please let me know and I will find some to share. The internet can be a confusing and overwhelming place when it comes to health. Having a trusted and well-educated healthcare professional to answer your questions is important.

Does a Naturopathic Doctor Replace My Family Doctor?

No! Naturopathic Medicine does not need to be used instead of conventional medicine. I strongly believe in a fine balance between conventional medications, natural health products, and lifestyle. Collaboration is key when it comes to health. It is important to let your medical doctor know that you are working with a Naturopathic Doctor to assist with your health conditions. This ensures you are receiving the most effective and safest care possible. Similarly, it is important to let your Naturopathic Doctor know which medications you are taking and what tests you have received from your medical doctor. I am more than happy to contact your medical doctor to discuss necessary lab tests, your health goals, or simply to introduce myself and answer any questions they may have.

What Do I Need To Do To Improve My Health?

While I can guide you to make lifestyle changes, take certain supplements, and provide specific treatments for you, ultimately the choice is yours. Your commitment and compliance are important for achieving the results you want. I will always recommend what I believe will get you the best results possible. However, I understand that everybody has constraints. If there is ever a time you do not believe my treatment plan will fit into your current means, we can work together to find something that will. Fortunately, we have many tools to choose from to assist you in improving your health.

It's "Natural", So It Must Be Safe, Right?

Nope. This is one reason why it is very important to not attempt to self-prescribe natural supplements. You should always first consult a qualified and educated healthcare practitioner. (This does not include a health food store employee – I can say this, I used to be one!) Many herbs, for example, have strong interactions with conventional medications. Taking the two together may result in your medications not working as they should in your system. This can lead to dangerous side effects. Working with your Naturopathic Doctor will allow them to take your full health history and determine what is right (and safe) for you.

Do I Need To Have Specific Health Concerns To See You?

Not at all! While I can definitely help my patients with managing their health concerns, ultimately Naturopathic Medicine is also proactive health. Seeing your Naturopathic Doctor can help you to make important lifestyle modifications, learn how to detect subtle changes in your body, and know what to do to prevent your health from becoming an issue. While you may not have specific health concerns, many people find that Naturopathic Medicine can still impact their health.

Simple changes can result in:

  • Energy you never realized you could have
  • A clearer and more focused mind
  • Improved digestion
  • Hormonal balance
  • And so much more!

Just as you may see your medical doctor for a yearly check-up, it is important to see your Naturopathic Doctor as well to make sure you are on the right track!
